Chapter Seven
“Bye, munchkin.” Jake kissed his sleeping daughter’s cheek and walked out of her room. The day had been endless, from Callie’s crying during the setting of the cast to settling her in Lindsay’s car for the ride home to the drugstore run for painkillers to the viewing of Beauty and the Beast to distract Callie from the pain. Jake had been solely focused on his daughter.
Still, when he’d gotten Phoebe’s text that she left with her sister and he should concentrate on Callie, his stomach had twisted in a painful knot. Leaving Phoebe alone after making love to her all day hadn’t been in his plan. And to do it after Lindsay’s clingy irrational behavior hadn’t helped. Even if he should have handled the whole situation better or at least thought ahead. Now he had the fun job of telling his ex-wife he had a son with his first love.
He stepped out of Callie’s room to find Lindsay waiting for him in the hallway. Since going in to see Callie in the hospital, she hadn’t brought up Phoebe, and he knew that was about to change. He might as well be proactive about it.
“Lindsay, can we talk?” he asked, following her down the hall to the kitchen.
She narrowed her brown eyes at him. “I’m not sure we have anything to say.”
So she was playing the wounded party. “Lindsay, look, I wanted to talk to you before you found out about Phoebe. We ran into each other again on one of my jobs and we… reconnected.”
She picked up a dishtowel and began wiping down the clean counter. “I’ll just bet you did—reconnect,” she said, wrinkling her nose in disgust.
He held on to his temper. “I’m sorry you’re upset, but we aren’t married anymore.”
She tossed the towel onto the counter and turned, folding her arms across her chest. “And why is that?” she asked. “Because she was always between us.”
“Not intentionally, you know that. I tried my best to be a good husband.” Lindsay had just been too perceptive, noticing that he’d held back a part of his heart. He hadn’t meant to be distant. Just like she hadn’t meant to be overly needy. Or maybe he’d caused that behavior in her. Who knew.
He shook his head. “There’s no point in rehashing this subject. I ran into Phoebe again and we’re involved now, but there’s something else you need to know.”
“What’s that?”
He drew a deep breath. “When she was sixteen, she gave birth to my son.”
A half hour of dramatic crying later, Jake walked out of his ex-wife’s house, drained and exhausted. He’d made it clear to Lindsay that he intended to be a parent to Jamie and that meant Callie would be meeting her brother. She’d sobbed about how she’d wanted a big family with him, that they should all be together. And that she’d only asked for the divorce to shake him up and make him see what they’d be losing. She’d rehashed it all until his head hurt.
He settled into his truck and pulled out his cell.
